The lake and the river are important ecological habitats as well as important landscape features..The lake was constructed as part of the High Leigh estate landscaping in the mid 1800’s and enlarged during the 1920’s prior to it being given to the people of Hoddesdon.
The lake is fed from Spitalbrook running alongside and the water levels to the lake are controlled by sluice gates at each end to allow water in and out of the lake
